Atta Girl! is a vivid, poignant
coming of age memoir in the funny, authentic voice of a girl living in the repressive 1950s in Queens. In addition
to attending P.S. 2 and
J.H.S. 141, Genie goes to Hebrew school on Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays, ballet class, and away to CEJWIN, a
Jewish camp for the summers. Here is a
sensitive, inquisitive girl who has read THE DIARY OF ANNE
FRANK three times before she turns 13 and often thinks, about
God, the Holocaust and the nature of good and evil. She
loves the library and sits for long periods reading as her
mother calls her for dinner. She plays "potsy"" on the streets,
worries about the meaning of life and if a boy, preferably a
composite of Holden Caulfield and Anthony Perkins, will ever
like her. Hers is an unrestrained voice
asking all the unasked questions and trying to find her own
answers. She wonders aloud about her boring life and
neighborhood, as well as her unique family; younger sister,
mother, and the father who not infrequently utters the loving
words that provide the memoirs title, ATTA GIRL! |
